Alex Machacek, Jeff Sipe, Matthew Garrison- Improvision (2007)
Buy the cd

This formidable power trio of Austrian guitarist Alex Machacek, 5-string electric bassist Matthew Garrison and drummer Jeff Sipe is impossibly intense, dripping with staggering virtuosity and fertile ideas and seething with the kind of raucous improvisational abandon that we haven’t seen since the heyday of Tribal Tech. For fans of acknowledged guitar monsters like Allan Holdsworth, Scott Henderson and the late, great Shawn Lane, the opening track of their new album says it all: "There’s A New Sheriff In Town."

Machacek’s mind-boggling technique -- blazing speed, uncannily fluid lines and daring intervallic leaps -- is an obvious place to begin in singing the praises of this exciting new triumverate. But beyond the abundance of soloistic fireworks on Improvision provided by both Alex and Matthew, one of the most gifted and creative bassists on the post-Jaco scene, there is also a remarkable depth to the writing here, which comes across on harmonically sophisticated pieces like the atmospheric ballad "Very Sad," the compelling "Shona," the gentle, darkly alluring "To Whom It May Concern" and the gorgeous "Put Me Back To Sleep." Elsewhere, they exercise zen-like restraint on the freewheeling jam "Yoga For Cats, Part 1 and 2," then go for the burn on the aggressively slamming, chops-laden fusion showcase, "Gem1 and Gem2." And the astounding "Matt’s Riff," is a brilliant showcase for Garrison’s 21st century approach to the electric bass guitar. This stuff takes me back to the early ‘70s, to a time when creativity, concept and risk-taking were the watchwords in fusion music.Bill Milkowski is a regular contributor to Jazz Times, Jazziz, Bass Player, Modern Drummer and Absolute Sound magazines. Project Z - Lincoln Memorial
Jimmy Herring(guitar);Ricky Keller(bass); Jeff Sipe, aka Apt Q-258(Drums);Jason Crosby (Keyboards);Greg Osby (Saxophone)

Review by Bill Milkowski
As a followup to its auspicious, self-titled debut from 2000, Project Z unleashes with wreckless abandon on a program of purely spontaneous music that is as daring as it is dazzling. Recorded live at Zac studios in Atlanta, Lincoln Memorial is audacious and strictly in-the-moment, full of virtuosic turns from all the participants in this musical free-for-all, with allusions to electric Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, Allan Holdsworth and Col. Bruce Hampton along the way. Joining the core group of guitarist Jimmy Herring, bassist Ricky Keller and drummer Jeff Sipe in this adventurous, no-holds-barred outing are keyboardist Jason Crosby and acclaimed Blue Note recording artist and producer Greg Osby. The crescendos are orgasmic, the collective improv telepathic. Music this subversive never sounded so good. --Bill Milkowski

Jeff Sipe - Timeless
Jeff Sipe (Apt Q-258), Paul Hanson, Derek Jones, Scott MesserSmith, Derek Trucks, Jason Crosby, Kofi Burbridge, Mayookh Bhowmik, Count M'Butu

Timeless" is my first studio recording as both producer and performer. What I wanted to convey with this work was a musical offering back to the Creator. It is about peace. I thought about the power of music and the truth and beauty in a melody and the timeless healing of a song in a prayer. Through earlier conversations the musicians knew what I had hoped to create on this session. With these intentions, the players; Paul Hanson, Kofi Burbridge, Jason Crosby, Count M'Butu, Derek Jones, Derek Trucks, Scott Messersmith and Mayookh Bhaumik made the music come together magically. Their brilliant performances and ability to express this music made this recording a success. So this is our offering back through music, to put more melody in the world, to connect to the truth through timeless beauty.

I hope you enjoy,........Jeff"Apt.q-258"Sipe.
